Installation at 449 Cambridge Street Extended Through Spring

We’re pleased to announce that our installation at 449 Cambridge Street will remain up through spring. Titled Postcards and Portraits from Allston, the exhibit is AVMS’s second installation in the past two years showcasing photography that captures the color and character of Allston. Of course you can also see the work here, in our digital gallery .

At the 449 Cambridge Street installation, a sequence of 18 color photographs begins with a series that portrays Allston’s vibrant murals and storefronts, moves onto images that juxtapose older buildings with new construction, and concludes with portraits of people who own or run the mom and pop businesses that define Allston’s commercial district.

A second sequence features 13 black and white portraits of artists, musicians and local activists who work to keep Allston welcoming and affordable to the creative community and immigrants that give the neighborhood its personality. Floating leaves and vines by local mural artist Jeremy Sobek add a touch of street art to the installation.

“I think it’s important for art to be accessible to the people and community that inspired it,” said Boches, who has photographed in Allston for the last two years. “There’s something wonderful about walking down the street and seeing pictures that capture your own life and experience. You shouldn’t have to go to a gallery to see that.”

According to Alex Cornacchini, executive director of AVMS, the exhibit is a visible expression of Allston Village Main Streets mission, “We want to support the local business community by making Allston a more appealing place to visit, shop, eat and drink. Installations like this clean up storefronts that have sat empty for a while and more importantly let us portray the energy of the neighborhood and the people who shape it.”
